Many women in the critical age group for breast cancer screenings, 65 and older, do not get their annual mammograms. This an be for a myriad of reasons and HAWC-RC is here to help. This can be setting up screenings with Ballinger Memorial Hospital, assisting with transportation to and from the hospital for mammogram screenings, bone density screenings, and more.
HAWC-RC will have booths at fests and other events around the county. We will share information on health, as well as offer free health screenings, such as blood glucose screenings. One of our goals is to help diabetics receive diabetic testing supplies free, or at a reduced coast.
When you choose us, you join a community. We work not just with you but with other members of our community to build a network of people working together for a healthier world. To this end, we have a certified Community Healthcare Worker to help you.
We are a coalition of people and organizations working to improve the health and well-being of Runnels County Residents, families, and communities. We are also FOR people, and FOR organizations.
In our efforts, we seek to promote and demonstrate the value of living local; working, worshiping, eating, purchasing local, and otherwise supporting the local economy and organizations whenever, and wherever possible, because that is best for the health, as well as the financial well-being of Runnels County.
Runnels County has significant unmet needs, as well as substantial underutilized resources. There are currently 1,460 residents per primary care physician in Runnels County, as compared to the ratio of 1,640:1 for the entire state of Texas.
There is also the need for dental assistance as there is currently no dental service regularly provided in our county.
Our ratio for Mental Health Providers is 2,570:1, compared to 830:1 for the state.
These numbers highlight the burden that is placed on those needs. Even so, there are programs that are underutilized, so there is not only a lack of capacity, but a tremendous mismatch of capacity with beneficiary. This indicates a need to educate those in greatest need in order that they may utilize the programs that are available in the county and benefit from available transportation services and communication technology to maximize treatment and prevention of medical, dental, and mental health maladies.
In addition, we need to educate all of the populace about the silent suffering of many of their neighbors and the way that health disparities do damage to our community.
An addition complicating factor for many is the fact that 35% of children in Runnels County are in single parent households. Out of 2,333 children in our county, 817 are in single parent households, making these children more vulnerable to the immediate effects that are demographically obvious, including increased chance of food insecurity, among others.
We also seek to acknowledge and understand the transformations taking place in our society, and we hope to take the lead in transforming Runnels County into a model of tolerance, diversity, and sustainable flourishing. Perhaps, we might be an example for our wonderful state, and even for our nation.
